Some Learning Points
from the days' activities include:
1. The 5 Aside Game:
a. In the workplace, a lot of individuals have personal agendas
which may conflict with the teams' agenda. These personal agendas,
which are usually hidden affect their performance and the
performance of the entire organization
b. Organisations do not succeed when the individuals' agenda
conflicts with the team agenda.
c. The “do it all alone “leader does not get the support or the “buy
in” of his team members.
2. The Vision Game
a. Perception: We all see things differently.
b. Sometimes, we express what we see differently when we see the
same thing.
c. Communication: We should try to eliminate gaps otherwise we would
not have communicated the vision of the organization properly.
3. Blind Trust:
a. Leadership must be clear on their vision and mission
b. Leadership must be clear on their strategy to achieving the
vision and the mission
c. Leadership must be patient and accommodating
d. Leaders must communicate effectively with the different types of
people in their organizations.
e. Leadership must guide their people through the challenges and
obstacles to the business in the workplace.
f. Leadership must understand that people do not grasp things at the
same level, in the same manner and at the same rate.
4. Lets' Get Talking: Highlighting communication breakdown in
organizations.
a. Depending on when, where and whom the communication breakdown
occurs,
i. It will distort the organizations objectives
ii. It will distort the process
iii. It will distort the outcomes
iv. It will resort to strife and the apportioning of blame
5. The Banana Island Game:
a. The organization must be clear in their objectives
b. The organization must be specific about its processes and
procedures
c. The organization must have a learning culture and must have an
environment where people can acquire new skills
d. One person can only contribute a little, two people can do so
much but working together enables us achieve maximum results.
e. Organisations and their people can only attain new levels when
they acquire new skills regularly.
f. Organisations must engender a culture of shared responsibility.
g. The game accommodates situational leadership.
h. The game helped re-emphasize the principle of coming together,
staying together and working together.
True to the culture of VLA and the notions that teams must celebrate
their successes, the VLA team was applauded for successfully hosting
a ground breaking programme.
